In the new era of a big data world, educators can use data for designing their teaching in accordance with the students’ learning needs. Data helps to identify the students’ strengths and weaknesses; this will contribute to the ongoing improvement of teaching practices.
We piloted data-driven teaching in the two mandatory modules for accounting and finance programmes. If the students fail the modules, they will not be able to progress to the next level of studies.
Data from learning analytics as well as other relevant data sets including online quiz scores, weekly self-reflection comments, student attendance records etc., have been used to determine whether the students were actively or poorly engaged in the modules. We can then address any issues and adjust our teaching practice accordingly.

Using data to inform teaching is not new to educators. In the past, educators have been making their decisions based on their experience or the so-called valuable data in their head. With the advancement of educational technology, Learning Management Systems such as Canvas can provide larger and more complex data, i.e. learning analytics, for educational decision making.
The data-driven teaching approach has helped us to identify the students at risk so that we can take appropriate actions to support them at an early stage. Through their ongoing self-reflection upon the learning analytics, students have become more independent and responsible learners. Despite the challenges during the pandemic, both modules have received positive student feedback and achieved good results.

This webinar will be held on 21st July from 2-3:30 PM (BST) hosted by Chris Morrison and Jane Secker Co-chairs of the ALT CoOL SIG.

About this event

It is aimed at those working in education establishments who have received copyright infringement claims from picture agencies for their use of photographs, some of which are Creative Commons licensed. There are a number of individuals who appear to be deliberately uploading openly licensed photos to sites such as Flickr using older Creative Commons licences that specify images need to be attributed in a particular way. You can read more about this practice in a recent article in Computer Weekly: https://www.computerweekly.com/news/252488167/Automated-image-recognitio...

We will be joined by Andre Maingot from the Open University who will discuss how his institution has handled these claims. We will also be joined by Sarah Pearson and Brigitte Vezina from Creative Commons who will discuss good practice when using Creative Commons licensed content. The event will include short presentations but also be a workshop to discuss a shared approach from the UK education community to handling these claims in a way that doesn't encourage the practice some are calling 'copyright trolling.'

The session will be structured as follows:

Intro to the issue of copyright image trolling and the problems it’s causing universities, schools and colleges including some background on Pixsy and other agencies who look for possible copyright infringement in relation to image use (Jane and Chris) – 10 mins

Short case study from Open University on their experience and response (Andre Maingot) – 10 mins

Response from Creative Commons (Sarah Pearson) – 15 mins

Group activity to share experiences - to find out frequency it’s happening / what people have done and could be done - break-out room discussions – 30 mins

Next steps / any possible solutions and wrap up – 15 mins

This is a closed session only for those working in the education sector. Please complete the registration form and you will be sent joining instructions.

After a year of experimentation with remote instruction, institutions in the Asia-Pacific region and other regions are planning how remote learning can create versatile, sustainable and disruption-resilient learning opportunities in the future. However, teachers currently may not know how state-of-the-art learning technologies and educational development practices can support sustainable virtual instruction. Therefore, different organisations are organising various professional development initiatives on virtual instruction.

In the webinar, two professional development initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region will be explained in detail:

[Empowering Teachers for the Next-Stage Teaching with Emerging Learning Technologies]
In this initiative, we want to provide cross-region professional development webinars during Summer 2021 on educational technologies and educational development for virtual instruction. Some of the training topics include i) Artificial Intelligence for Teaching, Learning and Assessment, ii) Open Educational Resources (OER) and OER-enabled Learning, and iii) Engineering Education for the Next-Normal. This initiative is supported by IEEE Region 10 Educational Activities Committee.

[Empowering University Teaching Centres for the Next-Stage Virtual Teaching]
In this initiative, we aim to analyse the impact of COVID-19 e-teaching training programmes in universities as well as identify common training needs and recommended practices for virtual instruction in the next stage. Therefore, we are conducting studies to answer the following questions: How should we help teachers develop competencies for remote instruction through various types of training, training methods and training media? How should we facilitate change among stakeholders (students, teachers, supporting staff) for virtual instruction in the next stage? This initiative is supported by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong.
