Cooperative and collaborative forms of learning with hands-on experience have proven to be effective learning methods for engineering subjects. Hence, a teacher is no longer the primary source of knowledge and their role has shifted to a student-centric facilitator. Student-centered learning plays a major role in the education sector, requiring the teacher to work mainly as a facilitator. Collaborative learning provides an opportunity for the teacher to restructure the mode of teaching. Moreover, the increased use of mobile smart devices has changed the students’ pattern of learning. Thus, this presentation presents a Mobile Collaborative Learning and its effectiveness for engineering learning. When designing mobile collaborative learning activities teachers has to consider on a real-world scenario which motivates students for collaborative learning. Students should be able to share information easily as audio/video/ text and when sharing information bandwidth and file have to consider. When forming groups; small groups (3-4 members) and random group formation made effective results. Per group 1-2 facilitator(s) preferred with an industry expert. Self-evaluation, peer evaluation, group evaluation and teacher evaluation allowed students to work actively in the course.

Those that work within the field occupy a wide variety of roles and specialisms. It is the specialist nature of the field that can limit and narrow opportunities for career progression. Equally, working in such a changeable environment can present challenges for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as colleagues are confronted with a myriad of courses, certifications, and accreditations. To some, the CPD landscape can look like a continuum; technology occupies one end, pedagogy the other, with everything in between.

The session will then look at the technology/pedagogy dichotomy, and how colleagues can avoid falling into one of the two camps. This will lead to a broader discussion of learning technologists and the notion of the third space professional. The session will end with a discussion around career progression and some of the strategies colleagues can adopt to help them to get to where they want to be.

In the lead-up to the 2020/21 academic year, the School of Engineering at Newcastle University were undergoing some changes to their Undergraduate delivery, looking to combine four programmes – Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Marine Engineering – into one ‘Flexible Stage One’, where Engineering students gain a good overall foundation before specialising during Stage 2.

In order to accommodate the increased numbers of students, the school planned to move to a more blended learning delivery, allowing for greater flexibility in delivering lectures and lab-based activities. This also coincided with a switch to an improved VLE platform, which would enable the use of online tools to assist with remote delivery.

The arrival of the pandemic meant that changes to the plan were necessary, as teaching would have to move fully online. This meant adjustments, to labs in particular, to enable students to still meet the learning objectives by completing labs remotely.

In this webinar, we will discuss how we created and delivered these labs: from how they were structured in a new VLE, to the different methods used to enable students to complete the labs from home.

Kick start 2022, with Chris Morrison and Jane Secker's first webinar of the year, where we are being joined by two learning technologists working in UK higher education. ‘Confessions of a Learning Technologist’ is a chance to hear from two colleagues working in the educational technology field, to hear more about their perspectives on copyright. How does it impact on their day to day work? What are the types of queries they get from colleagues or have themselves about copyright matters?
