Drawing on my 35 years of experience in language teaching and management in secondary and higher education, this session will present examples of how the use of the internet and computer-mediated communication has augmented my impact as an educator, helped my personal and professional development and deepened my understanding of what learning really is and how best it can be supported.<br />

Expect the unexpected: examples of serendipity and connection, reflections on motivation and recognition, experiences of challenge and resilience. Join me to expose the dangers and rewards of open practice and to assess how it could work for you. Share a journey through social media to compile a tapestry of your own. <p>The long-term impact of the last year and the ongoing pandemic is hard to imagine. Fully online and blended learning have become everyone&rsquo;s business; all educators, learners, managers, senior leaders and policy writers have been drawn into the world of learning technology. The response from everyone has been phenomenal. This year&rsquo;s Annual Association for Learning Technology Conference provides an opportunity to bring us all together to reflect on the shared experience from our different perspectives. How has it challenged us? Where have we succeeded? What lessons have we learned? What might the future look like?</p>

<h3>About the Conference</h3>

<p>The ALT Annual Conference is the UK&rsquo;s main conference for Learning Technologists and one of the largest conferences of its kind. It is held over three days every September, providing a valuable and practical forum for practitioners, researchers, managers and policy-makers from education and industry to solve problems, explore, reflect, influence and learn.</p>

<p>This year&rsquo;s Annual Conference of the Association for Learning Technology will take place 7-9 September 2021. As the leading professional body for Learning Technology in the UK, ALT brings together professionals to disseminate research, share practice and develop policy since 1993.</p>

<p>This year&rsquo;s event will take place online and we are looking forward to welcoming hundreds of participants from the UK and across the globe.</p>

<p><strong>Cancellation policy</strong></p>

<p>Cancellations made in writing on or before 21 July 2021 will be eligible for a full refund minus a &pound;25 cancellation fee. Cancellations made after 21 July 2021 will not receive a refund. Substitutions are allowed if made in writing (email <a href="mailto:enquiries@alt.ac.uk">enquiries@alt.ac.uk</a>) before 12 August 2021.</p>

The challenges of embedding digital technologies in learning, teaching and assessment are complex, and rethinking the roles of educators has been at the foreground of recent Educause New Horizon expert panel reports. The most recent Jisc Student digital experience insights survey (2020) report highlighted that only 20% of students have experiences of simulation. The challenges of scale seem insurmountable &ndash; however, in this session we suggest some low-tech solutions, and invite participants to come along bringing their mobile phones and a google cardboard headset.&nbsp; We will discuss some of the barriers and solutions to changing practice, drawing upon the findings of the &lsquo;State of XR and Immersive Learning Outlook Report (2020).<br />

<p>ALT&rsquo;s members are invited to attend this year&rsquo;s Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held online at 10am (BST) on 15&nbsp;June 2021. The AGM will be open to all and all eligible Members will receive joining instructions the week prior to the AGM.</p>

<p>The Agenda for the AGM will be issued at least two weeks prior to the meeting. All papers for the AGM and related information will be published on our dedicated&nbsp;<a href="https://www.alt.ac.uk/about-alt/how-we-are-governed/agm">Annual General Meeting page</a>&nbsp;and circulated to those registered to attend.</p>

<p>Registrations will remain open until 15 June 2021 for observers.</p>

Since the start of the pandemic, teaching through web conferencing tools like Zoom has ushered in new challenges around student engagement. Lectures populated by just names or boxes and silent or empty breakout rooms. In-class teaching may feel like the engagement is higher as it is easier to gauge the reaction of the class. But is anyone actually listening? The advent of solely online teaching has arguably only highlighted a problem that was already there.<br />
<br />
The aim of this session is to look at how we might tackle engagement, both digital and &ldquo;analog&rdquo; going forward. In what ways can we approach discussions with our students proactively rather than reactively? The aim should not be about trying to find out why something has not worked but rather implementing a structure that is relevant to everyone participating in the class.<br />
<br />
Using Audience Response Tools to structure co-creative discussion around engagement and expectations is a solution to resolving the problem collaboratively. Structured engagement opportunities create a set of shared expectations and responsibilities for both students and staff. This makes transparent both why we teach in the way we do and what benefits students will gain from engagement. The expectations that should be considered are not just what we as educators think our students should do, but also the students&#39; expectations towards us and each other.<br />
<br />
This session will share some practical guidance on how to structure such discussions and how to facilitate a conversation when people may not want to turn on their camera or unmute their microphones.</p>
