Digital Learning in Higher Education - COVID-19 and Beyond will be published in June. The pandemic is however still with us and any ‘new normal’ has yet to arrive. We (John Traxler and Matthew Smith) decided to celebrate the book but more importantly to think about where we are now and where we are heading. Many of our contributors and collaborators will convene for a webinar on Wednesday 15th June 12:30 – 2pm. We will share reflections, predictions, experiences and incidents from across the UK university sector, and invite participants to then share theirs.

Hosted by the ALT West Midlands Group

The UNESCO Chair in the <a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.wlv.ac.uk/research/institutes-a... href="https://www.wlv.ac.uk/research/institutes-and-centres/education-observat... target="_blank">Education Observatory at the University of Wolverhampton will be hosting two more informal free online meeting of the West Midlands Membership Group of <a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.alt.ac.uk&source=gmail&... href="https://www.alt.ac.uk/" target="_blank">ALT, the Association for Learning Technology, to explore these issues with some challenging questions, fascinating insights and provocative ideas.

There is a global awareness of the extent to which our societies and our educational institutions, wherever they are, are permeated and dominated by the ideas, habits, values and structures of the white English majority culture. This awareness now is reflected in moves to ‘decolonise the curriculum’ (and to decolonise research methods, research ethics, and much else). This clearly begs questions about decolonising learning technology, questions about the extent to which our digital pedagogies, our digital technologies and us as learning technologists are complicit in this ignoring or suppressing of other ways of learning, understand and knowing, to the detriment of us all.

About our speakers:

Dr Sonja Strydom is a Senior Higher Education Advisor at the Centre for Learning Technologies at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. She obtained a DLitt et Phil (Psychology) in 2012 and a PhD (Curriculum Studies) in 2018. Her scholarly interests range from technology-augmented curriculum development, care perspectives, structure, agency & culture in HE as well as mixed research methodologies. Her current projects focus on the influences of post-humanist perspectives on curriculum and professional development practices.

Dr Taskeen Adam is an Associate Manager with Open Development & Education, and member of the EdTech Hub. She completed her PhD on ‘Addressing Injustices through MOOCs: A study among peri-urban, marginalised South African youth’ at the University of Cambridge. Her research highlighted that historical injustices, cultural imposition, and economic dependence continue to play a pivotal role in education. Her MPhil thesis focused on the ‘Sustainable Implementation of the One Laptop per Child project in Rwanda’. Alongside her academic pursuits, she pioneered Khwela (a regional online course platform) and Solar Powered Learning in South Africa as well as Mobile Education for Smart Technology in India. Prior to her career shift to EdTech, she worked as an electrical engineer, specialising in measurement and control. <a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://docs.opendeved.net/lib/?creator%3DA... href="https://docs.opendeved.net/lib/?creator=Adam&sort=date_desc" target="_blank">Publications available here.

In the week before the workshop, you will receive pre-workshop activities to complete to start progressing your portfolio.

Workshop Day

The workshop day has both live sessions and asynchronous activities scheduled from 9.15am to 4.00pm and concludes with networking opportunities with other candidates. The first half of the day will be focused on strategies for writing specific portfolio sections, including practical examples from accredited portfolios. The afternoon session will provide time for individual support and a peer review exercise.

Post-workshop support

Following on from the workshop day, you will receive the workshop materials to support you as you complete your portfolio.

Who should attend?

Anyone registered for CMALT who is keen to complete their portfolio more quickly, candidates who are working towards CMALT looking for more support and anyone looking to revise a referred portfolio. Digital Champions at the University of Bristol. She will present the development of this project, how the students work across the institution and reflect on the progress made so far. This is an exciting approach to help understand the students’ digital experience, and the session will give you a chance to learn more as well as share and discuss with others. In, I think, an ELESIG first, we will hear from some of the students too!

The move to online learning during the pandemic in 2020 was a real chance to develop and improve what digital education resources we had for students. The Digital Insights Survey data already showed us that our students did not feel they had a voice in decisions around their digital learning environment. It was more crucial than ever that all students could access engaging and timely help and guidance, and that they were all able to approach online learning with confidence. However, the Digital Education Office (DEO) at the University of Bristol (UoB) was always primarily focused on helping staff, so student-facing work was a new direction. It was difficult for us to access a direct student voice, but we knew it was important that students were involved in any changes that were being made. They were the ones learning online and we wanted to ensure that they got to have their say.

Introducing the Student Digital Champions

In November 2020, 12 Student Digital Champions (SDCs) were recruited by the DEO and Bristol SU, from across all faculties in the University. They were hired to reach out to students and course reps, and channel the student voice across the University straight to the DEO. They were particularly interested in finding examples of excellent student engagement, and looking at ways to foster feelings of community and motivation when learning online. Throughout their time working with us, they have created some incredible case studies and short media pieces, and concrete ideas for how we could do things differently as well as showcasing what is really going well. This fantastic work, which has made a real impact in the university, includes new student facing digital education blogs, online mingles and toolkits for staff using breakout rooms. They have also been instrumental in creating our ‘Digitally Ready’ induction course for 1st years, hosted on Blackboard, as well as providing feedback on a range of projects, including our Blackboard templates project.

The SDCs have shown us that co-creating solutions with students is a powerful, efficient and joyful way to work. They will now be a permanent addition to our team. It has been difficult to help them navigate the realities of the digital education world, and show them the constraints and limitations we face. However, in doing so we all have a better sense of what is possible, and desirable, for the future of student support and skills development. In this presentation, we hope to inspire others to consider changing their practice in such a dramatic was as we did, and to show the highs and lows of trying to co-create solutions to complex problems with students in real time.
