ALT/eLN free webinar - How to run a virtual classroom session

Event details:

Jointly with the E-Learning Network, ALT ran a free 90 minute lunchtime webinar: How to run a virtual classroom session.

More and more education and training providers are making use of web conferencing as a way to bring learners together for events that would have previously been conducted in the classroom, or which may not previously have been practical or economic on a face-to-face basis. Effective virtual classroom sessions go way beyond webinars or online meetings to involve all participants as much as or more than the physical classroom, through the use of a wide variety of multimedia and interactive techniques. In this session, Clive and Barry will share the benefit of their extensive experience with virtual classrooms to help you both assess the potential for the greater use of live online learning in your organisation and ensure that the sessions that you do deliver are as least as successful as your face-to-face events.

Presenter biographies:

Clive Shepherd is a consultant specialising in learning and communications technologies. He works with a broad range of public and private sector organisations, helping them to effectively harness the benefits of technology for workplace learning and communications. He established his interest in interactive media while Director, Training and Creative Services for American Express in Europe, Middle East and Africa. He went on to co-found Epic Group plc, the UK's major producer of custom e-learning, where he won many industry awards. He is widely acknowledged as one of the UK's foremost experts on e- and blended learning, with more than one hundred published articles and four books to his name. He has recently specialised in business communications, winning a prize in 2003 for his course Ten Ways to Avoid Death by PowerPoint. He speaks regularly at major international conferences and contributes regularly to his blog, Clive on Learning. He was recognised for his Outstanding Contribution to the Training Industry at the World of Learning Conference in 2004 and is currently Chair of the eLearning Network.

Barry Sampson is a consultant focussing on the use of web technologies to improve organisational learning, communication and performance. He has a diverse background, having been a retail manager before a move into HR and then on to training and development, where he went from stand-up training delivery to training manager. Later as Learning Technology Manager at B&Q he worked on a number of award-winning elearning and blended learning programmes, and championed the adoption of emerging tools such as blogs and wikis. Although he now spends much of his time watching the horizon for new and innovative developments in technology, he takes a pragmatic view of its use and his previous management experience keeps him focussed on its application to the business priorities of getting the right things done, on time and on budget.

Barry is an active committee member of the eLearning Network, where he has particular responsibility for their web presence and use of technology. He is a regular conference speaker on a wide range of subjects including web 2.0 technologies, social media and open source learning tools.
