Dr Julie Voce Awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Association for Learning Technology

Dr Julie Voce (PFHEA SCMALT) was awarded Honorary Life Membership at this year’s Association for Learning Technology (ALT) Annual Conference in Manchester, UK, on 4 September 2024. 

ALT awards Honorary Life Membership to individuals, nominated by Members, who have made an outstanding and sustained contribution to the advancement of ALT’s aims for the development of learning technology in a regional, national or international context through research, practice, policy development, leadership, or a combination of these.

With over 20 years of experience in the sector, Julie has become a highly respected leader with a well-earned reputation for her contributions to the advancement of learning technology. Her influence on the Learning Technology sector has been profound and multifaceted and has made her a deserving recipient of Honorary Life Membership at ALT. 

She has made remarkable and enduring contributions through her research and active participation in several sector-wide organisations, including ALT, UCISA, Jisc, and Advance HE. Julie has represented ALT at national events like Ahead by Bett and contributed to initiatives such as the Framework for Ethical Learning Technology and the Member Groups handbook. More recently supporting the content analysis of ALT’s journal. Julie has been instrumental in the UCISA TEL surveys, the creation of the UCISA DEG-DCG achievement award, and the Heads of e-Learning Forum (HeLF). She has also contributed to key publications like the UCISA VLE Review Toolkit and the UK Higher Education Learning Spaces Toolkit. Additionally, she led initiatives to support HeLF members in achieving the Advance HE Principal Fellowship and leads the CMALT cohorts at the Bloomsbury Learning Exchange.

Julie was nominated by many members of the ALT community. Reflecting on the important contribution she has made to the work of ALT, Members who nominated Julie commented that “Her willingness to collaborate, to learn, to innovate and to support the growth of the sector has been truly inspirational and infectious. Julie is a well-loved and well-respected leader and a shining example of achieving academic and professional successes, whilst always leaving the ladder down for others.” 

Speaking about the award, Julie said: "I am delighted to be awarded honorary life membership of ALT and to receive the award in Manchester, where my learning technology career started, made it extra special. ALT has played a significant role in my professional life for over 20 years. Throughout this time, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to and learning from this incredible community through a range of activities, such as Deputy Editor for the ALT newsletter, co-chairing the 2012 conference in Manchester, chairing the M25 Learning Technology Group, and serving as a CMALT assessor.

 I would like to express my sincere thanks to the ALT team and Trustees for this award, and a special thank you to my colleagues at City St George's and my ALT friends for nominating me. It was a wonderful surprise, and I am truly honoured to join such a distinguished list of life members. Community has always been at the heart of ALT, and I encourage all members to get involved in the wide range of activities it offers to grow and connect with others".
