Submit an expression of interest by 25 June 2025

ALT is seeking to appoint new editors to join the existing editorial team for the Research in Learning Technology (RLT) journal.  RLT is a peer reviewed, Open Access journal published by ALT that aims to raise the profile of research in learning technology, encouraging research that informs good practice and contributes to the development of policy. RLT publishes articles in the following broad areas: technology enhanced learning, online learning, distance learning, mobile learning, flexible learning, wearable technologies, simulation, learning environments, learning spaces, digital pedagogy, open educational practice, artificial intelligence and social media.

Journal Editors are Members of ALT who volunteer their time to review manuscripts and support authors to publication. The Editorial Team is led by the Editor-in-Chief with the support of the ALT staff team and our publishing partner, Open Academia. Our Journal Editors ensure the quality of manuscripts we publish and are pivotal in ensuring manuscripts are reviewed and published efficiently. Their experience and knowledge is vital in supporting authors to publication.

Editors are volunteers, and the role is unremunerated.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the editorial process for all manuscripts assigned to them.

  • Assign reviewers to manuscripts and monitor their progress.

  • Provide a final decision on manuscripts based on reviewer comments and their own opinion.

  • Liaise with authors and provide feedback.

  • Support the Editor-in-Chief to ensure manuscripts are reviewed and published in a timely manner.

  • Attend virtual editorial team meetings.

  • Actively promote the journal within their networks.

  • Solicit appropriate manuscripts for special issues or regular issues from within their networks.

What we are looking for

  • A background in research, evidenced by publications or successful support of others toward publication.

  • An understanding of research methods and best practices.

  • An understanding of the scholarship that underpins Learning Technology.

  • A commitment to the role and responsibilities of an editor.

  • An understanding of and commitment to the principles of open access publishing.

  • Experience of providing effective and supportive feedback to others.

  • Able to commit to the role for a minimum of three years with the maximum commitment being six years.

  • A current member of ALT in good standing or willingness to become a member upon appointment.

At ALT, equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are at the very heart of our values. Our Members come from all backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures and experiences and so do we. There is a lot of research that shows that marginalised groups are less likely to apply for a job if they do not meet 100% of the requirements. However, we value different experiences, skills and perspectives. We encourage you to apply for this role if you share the same values as us, even if you do not meet every requirement outlined in this advert.
