ALT launches an online course for CMALT candidates

CMALT Badge

ALT’s new online course for Certified Membership of ALT accreditation scheme candidates, ‘Your guide to Certified Membership of ALT (CMALT)’, launched during CMALT week 2025. The course is designed to provide all CMALT candidates with guidance that enables them to create, and confidently submit, their CMALT portfolio for assessment. Listening to candidate feedback and expert recommendations, the course adapts our existing guidance and introduces new and improved content.

The course is designed to enable candidates to engage with the course as suits them best. Candidates can choose to complete the course from start to finish, as a six-week course, or dip into the content that is most relevant to them. Each week focuses on one of the CMALT core areas and includes guidance and advice from existing holders and assessors.

The project to create a CMALT course began in 2023, when ALT sought volunteers from the community to help host, design and create the course. The King’s Digital team, from King’s College London, stepped forward to design the course and Catalyst IT Europe offered to host the course on a dedicated cloud-hosted Moodle platform.

A working group of ALT members, CMALT holders and assessors was formed to input into the course design, review and feedback on the course. Along with Members of the working group, CMALT holders and assessors participated in the filming of the video content on the course.

On the launch of the course, Amy Hollier, Director of Production at King’s Digital, said

Many people in our team at King’s Digital have gained or are working towards CMALT accreditation, so we were excited to collaborate with ALT on creating this course for CMALT candidates. Developing the course has been a great collaborative experience for us, involving many people within and beyond our multidisciplinary team. We hope that this course will be really helpful for current and future CMALT candidates across all pathways.

As proud platform hosts, Richard Oelmann, Head of Business Development and Consulting at Catalyst IT Europe, remarked

As the premier Moodle Partner for HE, and as long term members and supporters of ALT, Catalyst recognise the importance of suitable accreditations for members of the Learning Technologies community. Alongside facilitating both the Moodle Educator and Administrator Qualifications (MEQ/MAQ), Catalyst were very proud to be asked to support the CMALT accreditation through providing the platform for this course.

ALT’s CEO, Susan Martin, said

I want to thank Catalyst IT Europe and King’s Digital for their support in hosting, designing and developing the course. The huge amount of resources that have been dedicated to the project is testament to the generosity of ALT’s members and the importance of CMALT to the learning technology profession. I am proud to see this course come to fruition after years of work from those involved. I am certain it will be a source of much-needed additional support to our candidates.
