Description:

ALT is piloting a monthly 'Community Call' where we speak to ALT Members about their work. For our first call we speak with Lorna Campbell who is an advocate for open education, technology and practice. Lorna currently works as OER Liaison at the University of Edinburgh; EDINA which specializes in digital expertise and online service delivery; and as an independent consultant. This gives Lorna a unique view dealing with an institutional perspective as well as supporting a national service. In our first 'ALT Community Call' we find out more about Lorna's work and involvement with ALT.

We will be hosting this session as a Google Hangout On Air and you can watch the call from the Google+ page, YouTube Channel or embedded in this page below. You can ask questions during the call from the Google+ page or via Twitter by tagging it #altc.

Presentation by Martin Weller
Professor of Educational Technology, Institute of Educational Technology Open University

Introduced by Ella Mitchell and Sarah Bridgman .

The OER Research Hub has been investigating the impact of OERs, using eleven hypotheses, and a mixed methods approach to establish an evidence base. This talk explores the findings relating to teaching and learning. The findings reveal a set of direct impacts, including an increase in factors relating to student performance, increased reflection on the part of educators, and the use of OER to trial and supplement formal study. There are also indirect impacts, whose benefits will be seen after several iterations. These include the wide scale reporting of adaptation, and the increase in sharing and open practice that results from OER usage.
