Description:

Are you interested in a joint reflective practice presentation regarding graduate students’ learning about OER and openness? What this learning process is like from the point of view of an instructor – the observations, concerns, and celebrations that unfolds individually and collectively each time a student or class, synchronically or idiosyncratically learns about openness – whether face to face, blended or completely online environments?

In this webinar Connie Blomgren (Athabasca University), Elizabeth Childs (Royal Roads University) and Clint Lalonde (BCcampus) provide the point of view of such perspectives and their experience of teaching graduate students ranging from instructional designers to K-12 teachers. Because of who these graduate students are, the presentation is also about how Elizabeth, Connie and Clint, personally and professionally, currently experience openness and participatory technologies, their perceptions of the barriers, and their hope in meeting the challenges of open education.

Our presenters will consider how making explicit open educational practices (OEP) enable graduate students to name what they do and how it fits within their developing digital literacies and pedagogy. The presentation offers an informal pulse-taking of what graduate students currently experience through their study of OEP (Cronin, 2017) and related research. These students will be able to share out their knowledge with colleagues and their own students, and thus support the growth of OEP with a sense of criticality and tempered optimism (Weller, 2010).

Despite the numerous benefits of OER (McGreal, 2017) and the inroads of BC Campus, ABOER and eCampus Ontario, there remains significant work to be done. Pockets of educators, at all levels, have yet to make a substantial difference affecting the awareness, use, and advocacy for OER. Vague understandings of OER textbooks is not enough.

The webinar will run in Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, and we will issue joining instructions approximately three days prior to the event. Even if you are familiar with Blackboard, it is important that you check in advance that your system and connection are capable of handling a session. More support on using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra is available from https://help...., and refer to the guidance at https://www.alt.ac.uk/events/... />

Description:

This webinar is organised by ALT as part of our work with the Further Higher Education Digital AccessibilityWorking Group (FHEDAWG). Elizabeth Charles, Trustee of ALT, and Maren Deepwell, chief executive, will facilitate the session.

You can view a recording of the session and also <a href="https://www.alt.ac.uk/sites/alt.ac.uk/files/civicrm/persist/contribute/f... the slides from this session (.pptx).

In this webinar Ben Watson and Daniel Clark of the University of Kent present a discussion accessibility and inclusivity in relation to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Virtual Learning Environments. The session will give a brief overview of the regulations and the opportunities they present to embed inclusivity by design in virtual learning environments, and discuss some of the initiatives being explored at Kent (for instance setting up a specific working group, Blackboard Ally, web auditing, collaborating with GDS to create accessibility statements and partnerships with local authorities). The presenters would also like to seek feedback from participants about good practice in their own institutions, and hope this will present a good opportunity for colleagues to discuss the collective challenges we face as a sector and identify opportunities to share good practice and collaborate beyond institutional barriers to help all of our students.

The next Teaching and Learning Conversation (TLC) is on Tuesday 2 April at 12:00 – 13:00 (60 minutes) with Dr Helen Webster, Head of the Writing Development Centre, Newcastle University.

This month’s TLC is titled ‘Working One to One: Authentically Student-centred Learning Development’. Learning Developers, Personal Tutors, Peer Mentors, Dyslexia Tutors, Librarians… Many of us work one to one with students to help them reflect on their learning and develop their academic literacies and wider study skills. Such work often aims to be person-centred, and Learning Development and allied professions are strongly rooted in common values of working in partnership with students through inclusive, emancipatory practice, values that are student-centred and aspirational rather than remedial or deficit. However, in the wider dominant teaching culture of our HE institutions, we are often placed in an implicitly hierarchical relationship with students, “giving advice and guidance”, at odds with these values. This session explores an alternative. It asks how the profession of Clinical Psychology, a branch of mental health practice, has also sought to move away from this ‘doctor knows best’ approach using the core skill of Formulation, and whether it could be adapted for Learning Development one to one practice. With a focus on equality, person-centred practice and co-created meaning, it is well aligned to Learning Development values.

Full details of this free and open TLC, and joining instructions, are available on the TLC website at: https://tlcwebinars.wordpress.com...
