In this webinar Chris Morrison and Jane Secker (who run the website <a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=http://copyrightliteracy.org&source=gma... href="http://copyrightliteracy.org/" target="_blank">copyrightliteracy.org) discuss the relationship of copyright literacy (which is the knowledge, skills and behaviours to use copyright content in an ethical way) to open practice.

Chris and Jane have a number of questions that they think are worth asking: Do open practices rely on a good understanding of copyright? Can we be open without understanding licensing? Openness is often equated with far more than just open licensing, however if we wish to share our teaching and research as widely as possible and be as inclusive as possible do we need to build openness onto a foundation of how copyright law and other types of intellectual property work in higher education? Does this mean challenging the status quo? Who can and can't get access to the content they need to learn? Should we use only open access readings if we want to be truly open? What voices might be missing if we do this? Is openness really inclusive?

This webinar is organised by ALT as part of our work with the Further Higher Education Digital Accessibility Working Group (FHEDAWG). This time we welcome a special guest Gavin Henrick who is an experienced educational technology consultant, with over 15 years’ experience delivering education solutions with a focus around online and blended learning technologies, such as Moodle. Gavin and his team has been working on evaluating, remediating and improving platforms and content with an accessibility lens taking a bigdata / smalldata approach.

This session will be a discussion and information sharing on how people are approaching the accessibility with regard to their VLE and Online Learning Content specifically. As part of this webinar Gavin is inviting attendees to consider and contribute experiences around:

What are the challenges right now around accessibility?

What type of testing do they carry out (if they carry any out)?

What resources are they using to help fix the issues found?

Gavin is also inviting attendees to share any other questions they would like covered which can be asked via the Vevox Q&A App

This webinar is organised by ALT as part of our work with the Further Higher Education Digital AccessibilityWorking Group (FHEDAWG). This time we welcome a special guest: Greg Gay is IT Accessibility Specialist at Ryerson University and shares this project from the Creative Commons Global Summit.

Barriers in digital information can prevent people with disabilities from participating as full members of society. It’s surprising that digital accessibility practices are still rarely taught as part of formal education. Digital accessibility is integral to enabling all learners in today’s information society. Teaching digital accessibility as part of college and university curriculum is important.

To fill the gap, Ryerson University has created five practical online courses and corresponding interactive, modular, and open textbooks aimed at raising awareness of digital accessibility globally.

Description:

Two sides of the same coin - what can the research community foster their own community version of ALT?

The learning technology community has truly established itself as an integral part of the higher education ecosystem. They are masters of many skills that are backed by pedagogy and underpinned by technology. This role is supported by a myriad of professionals who work centrally and embedded in departments to enhance the whole learning and teaching experience in a digital ecosystem. The same can be said of the research community in that there has been a progressive move on campuses with the development of research support roles. These include those working in Open Access, research data management, metrics and science communication. Yet there does not seem to a research equivalent of the learning technologist?

In my work over the last ten years I have come across professionals through my writing and talks who align themselves and their work with the ideology of the ‘research technologist’ but there is no truly defined role. Nethertheless, as with learning and teaching how research is being conducted, shared, communicated and re-used is changing at an increasing pace and requires more support to adapt with such big changes. Technology and the move towards more open practices is driving this change. With this move there has been an increased demand by academics, institutions and external agencies to successfully integrate these technologies into practice. The REF, impact agenda, reproducibility of research, involvement with the media and public are all instrumental in bringing this change.

Does such a community exist and where do they operate? The chances are that it does in an unstructured way across various professional bodies and platforms from ALT to UKSG to Cilip among other notable groups. They may not be called a research technologist but there is no doubt they share common skill-sets and practices. Where they are situated in the organisation may also vary from academic department to centralised professional services.

The purpose of this webinar will be to explore what a research technologist looks like and what core skills are needed to carry out such a demanding and ubiquitous role? We will compare similarities between the research and learning technology communities and how they can also try to learn from each other in an environment that can treat research and teaching as wholly separate activities.
