Findings from our 2023/24 Annual Survey

We are pleased to share the key findings from our Annual Survey. The survey explores the main trends in learning technology with a focus on digital transformation, that includes:

  • The top nominated tools as the software of the year
  • Models of learning in the UK
  • Biggest challenge for digital transformation

 

This survey provides an insight into how Learning Technology is being used across sectors, as well as identifying emerging trends in current and future practice. The survey was open for responses between 25 January 2024 and 22 Feburary 2024.

Trends in Learning Technology

Our findings provide an in-depth insight into various topics that relate to digital transformation in learning technology. Blended and hybrid models of learning continue to be the dominant model with 75% of respondents, same as last year. 

ChatGPT is the most used software in 2023/24 according to respondents. That is followed by other tools including Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office 365, Blackboard Ultra and Miro. This year's survey, showed an increasing use of large language models and generative AI tools such as CoPilot and ChatPDF.

The report also explores factors that are considered to be the biggest challenge for digital transformation. Dedicated time, institutional culture and strategy and leadership remaining key challenges.

Professional development in Learning Technology

The professional recognition of roles continues to increase. Opportunities to undertake continuing professional development online remain important to respondents. The structural support for roles has improved and the number of professionals seeking to change roles continues to increase. 

Learning Technologist remains the predominant job title submitted by respondents.

About ALT's Annual Survey

Our Annual Survey was established in 2014 in order to:

  • Help to map professional practice and development in Learning Technology;
  • Chart how Learning Technology is used across sectors;
  • Understand current practice to better meet the needs of and represent our members.

 

The survey is open to all ALT Members, both individuals and organisations. We welcome responses from anyone with an interest in Learning Technology, including non-members.

What happens to the data we collect?

Results of the survey are openly published each year in spring. The survey forms the basis of important strategic insights for Members. All data submitted via this survey is analysed and shared openly in anonymised form and handled in accordance with the ALT Privacy Policy.
