This webinar session is aimed at educators who aspire to become leaders and influencers among teams supporting learning and teaching core activities in educational settings. Whether you have managerial responsibilities or not, this is a very practical session that will help you step into leadership coming from a professional background of technology-enhanced learning or academic services.
Leadership in an educational context involves multiple dimensions, including the ability to influence and guide academics/lecturers, in addition to professional staff; that is why the session will be focused on these three key aspects:
- How to become an empathetic manager/leader: scenarios and approaches to become an empathetic manager and when to use different leadership styles to help different team members to unleash their full potential.
- Conflict in teams: why conflict can be useful sometimes; approaches and techniques that you can use to build trust in a team whose members have different backgrounds, nationalities, cultural heritage, etc.
- How to influence academics/lecturers: as leading teams in learning and teaching also involves being able to influence those who are in teaching positions, what techniques and approaches can be adopted to establish trust with academics and enable them to unleash their creativity?
The session facilitators, Mari Cruz, Dave Baskill and James Igoe have a strong background forming, leading and managing teams in both the private and the HE sectors:
- Mari Cruz García is an expert in digital education and a former international telecom consultant. Working for Telefónica Móviles International, she was the founder of the Interconnection Department at the start-up company Group 3G-Quam (Germany). In the United Kingdom, she was part of the initial team that started the Kuwait Scotland eHealth Innovation Network (KSeHIN), an educational partnership between the Dundee Medical School and the Dasman Diabetes Institute. She is a Higher Education Academy (HEA) Fellow and currently works at Heriot-Watt University (Scotland).
- James Igoe works as a Learning Technologist in the Heriot-Watt Online programme. He has worked in a variety of technology roles for almost 20 years and in online learning since 2011.
- David Baskill is an experienced international project manager whose expertise is driving and implementing change as well as managing ambiguity and uncertainty in complex environments. In the private sector, he worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland (Scotland) and Kaisha Technology (USA). He currently works at Heriot-Watt University, where he leads the implementation of the VLE and Eportfolio project.
