Description:

Registration for this event is now closed. If you'd like to be added to the waiting list, please email enquiries@alt.ac.uk.

The context for the symposium are the major changes facing us across sectors, from area based reviews and development of apprenticeships in the Further Education system to how we demonstrate excellence in teaching and research in Higher Education. The key question we will be exploring is how policy and organisational culture can enable effective innovation in Learning Technology, innovation that goes beyond small pilots or islands of best practice. We will critically consider what common challenges (some concrete, here-and-now, some less tangible at present) we face, and how Learning Technology can help meet them.

This symposium is organised by the Association for Learning Technology and we gratefully acknowledge the support from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in hosting the event.

It’s free to attend but places are limited. ALT Members and in particular representatives from ALT Member organisations will be given priority where possible.

Summary proceedings from the symposium will be published openly and will inform the ALT Strategy for 2017-2020.

Description:

ALT is piloting a monthly 'Community Call' where we speak to ALT Members about their work. For our next call we speak with Paul Gormley (@pgormley123) from the Irish Learning Technology Association (ILTA http://ilta.ie).

ALT and ILTA are both membership charities working to enhance learning technology knowledge and practices in education. ALT and ILTA undertake similar activities in their respective regions by: informing national policy through research activities and strategic consultation; developing partnerships with local and international agencies; managing online, peer-reviewed, open access journals; organising annual conferences; providing awards for innovation; and representing members nationally and internationally.

There are, and have been, considerable overlaps between the work of ALT and ILTA for some time, with members of each body contributing to respective activities such as attending national conferences and providing input to research activities. These synergies led to ALT (Maren Deepwell) and ILTA (Paul Gormley) signing a Memorandum of Understanding on March 4th 2014.

For this month's call we talk to Paul about ILTA, exploring the role of communities in sharing and building knowledge. We will also get a preview to ILTA’s annual conference EdTech 2016 which is going to be held in Dublin 26-27 May 2016 http://ilta.ie/edtech/edtech-2016/</...

We will be hosting this session as a Google Hangout On Air and you can watch the call from the Google+ page, YouTube Channel or embedded in this page below. Description:

This webinar will give an overview of the Blended Learning Consortium. This is a group of more than 10% of UK Colleges, led by Heart of Worcestershire College, who are working together to co-develop and share high quality blended learning resources, for the sector by the sector.

The webinar will be led by Peter Kilcoyne and Peter Robinson of Heart of Worcestershire College.

Peter Kilcoyne leads the team that won 2015 TES and 2014/15 AoC awards for their work in successfully implementing blended learning across Heart of Worcestershire College and supporting other colleges across the sector in implementing their own blended learning curriculum.Peter has been ILT Director at Heart of Worcestershire College (previously Worcester College of Technology) since 2006. Previous to this he has worked for Jisc as an ILT Curriculum Advisor and has had 14 years’ experience working as a Lecturer and Manager in the FE and HE sectors.

Peter Robinson is Assistant Principal for Higher Education and Standards at Heart of Worcestershire College. He started his career in Further and higher Education in 1994 after working in international trade, and has always been aware of the need for learners to develop independent learning skills, to help them secure long-term success in a constantly changing and evolving marketplace. Peter has taught at all levels in Further Education, and throughout his teaching career he has integrated the use of new learning technologies with pedagogical theory. In 2015, the Heart of Worcestershire College won both the Association of Colleges Beacon Award for the Use of Technology in Learning and the Times Educational Supplement for most innovative use of ILT in a further education setting. These two awards were given for the college's new blended learning model, which places ILT equitably alongside "classroom-based learning" for all full-time learners at the college, as part of their Study Programmes. As a result of this success and in line with the institution's values to collaborate and innovate, the college has now created a national Blended Learning Consortium. The BLC will create online learning materials and advance their use across the sector.

Description:

Disabled students need access to resources that can be adapted to suit their needs along with successful interaction with assistive technologies. The provision of accessible materials is now a legal obligation. Can OER provide a solution for both students and institutions? The UKOER programme from 2009-2012 produced a huge range of teaching materials, many of which tried to incorporate accessibility features. But access audits have shown that the embedding of accessibility features has often been forgotten. This may have been due to the complexities involved with the process of releasing OERs or a lack of awareness about the ease with which some small adaptations can enhance use for all, not just for those with disabilities. This webinar will look at how materials can be released in an accessibility-friendly way with minimal effort. A culture of inclusive thinking, from purchases to personal practices, is good for everyone and all the more urgent with changes to disabled student allowances.

ALT is piloting a monthly 'Community Call' where we speak to ALT Members about their work. For next call we speak with John Couperthwaite (@johncoup) consultant at PebblePad and also active in a number of ALT committees. In this month's call, John will discuss how generating smart data about our learners is not enough. Smarter tools are required to help them, their tutors, supervisors and careers advisors, make better sense of how the data relates to the individual, including their attitudes to learning, academic accomplishments, life-wide interests and future aspirations. Examples of emerging practice in personal tutoring, research supervision and support employability will be introduced. We also talk about to John about his involvement in ALT’s Membership Development Committee and his experiences of being involved in ALT as a consultant for commercial organisation.

We will be hosting this session as a Google Hangout On Air and you can watch the call from the Google+ page, YouTube Channel or embedded in this page below.
