At this session we will provide information and support to new CMALT assessors, providing an overview of the assessment criteria, advice on how to complete an assessment, and an opportunity to see how the assessment process works.

There will also be time for individual questions at the end of the session.

ALT is celebrating 25 years this year and the Annual Conference is in Manchester, 11-13 September (https://altc.alt.ac.uk/2018/r...). There is still time to register to attend, but for Northern Ireland members who are unable to attend in person, we are hosting virtual sessions in Belfast in a similar vein to last year; one day at Ulster University and one day at Queen’s University.

We will be meeting around 8.30/9.00am each day to register, make introductions and get some ideas of what people would like to gain from the day. Then we will link in with the conference live stream from Manchester (note all live streamed talks have the YouTube icon on the programme). Based on last year’s feedback we will be finishing up just after lunch to allow people to get back to their desks for the afternoon.

All interested in #femedtech are invited to participate in this online event where we can reflect on recent volunteer curation of @femedtech and #femedtech and consider what plans we might have for femedtech.

Frances Bell <a href="http://francesbell.com/uncategorized/femedtech-curation-and-what-next-fe... title="read the blog">recently blogged about this upcoming webinar:

Femedtech (<a href="http://francesbell.com/bellblog/femedtech-you-are-invited-to-a-work-in-p... brief history) currently comprises a Twitter handle @femedtech and a hash tag #femedtech and a network of great people who engage variously with femedtech. There was some great collaboration in evolving the concept of femedtech – much work done behind the scenes by talented and busy women. Over the last year the interaction was confined to #femedtech and my curation of @femedtech, and we knew we could reach further.

In April 2018, Helen Beetham, Maren Deepwell and I worked on the concept of shared curation inspired by @IndigenousX. We started with ourselves, and invited people to join us. We were delighted with the response and are evolving the process of curation along with our volunteer curators who experiment, share reflections and tips in our <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/166Wm-Qw4hPWtLTdyIAOCVextVHqcRJQX... space. The chart below reveals how the number of tweets, follows and followers has grown thanks to our lovely volunteer curators. They have also shared their thoughts on who to follow, retweeting and linking tweets to current relevant events and topics in the curation space.

We have curators for the remainder of 2018 and the current process is sustainable as the work of changing and sharing passwords is once a fortnight, and curators have time to settle into the role.

We are keen to extend collaboration on the process of curation and what else we might do. With that in mind, we are holding a <a href="https://eu.bbcollab.com/collab/ui/session/guest/d7ac3654ec4f464abda07b18... webinar 1200-1300 GMT 19 July <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20180719T11000... to time converter. All interested in #femedtech are invited to participate so that we can reflect on recent volunteer curation of @femedtech and #femedtech and consider what plans we might have for femedtech.

If you would like to contribute but are unable to attend please share your ideas in this <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KEHLGEAAd5nu5-aCC6NbRJh6EaGWGCbSFQjn... at #femedtech.

Looking forward to lots of bright ideas and useful advice, at webinar or elsewhere.

This month’s TLC is titled ‘Developing the Congruent Educator’ brought to you by Emma Gillaspy, Digital teaching & learning manager, School of Health & Society, University of Salford.

This webinar will explore the potential for taking a coaching approach to learning and teaching development and how we can work holistically with individual’s strengths to ensure they are happy, satisfied and performing at their best.

Academia is facing a period of sustained and unprecedented change. A recent global study by Roland Persson from Jönköping University reported by Times Higher Education (2017) showed that stress in academia is on the rise due to increased workload and a lack of support.

Whitmore (2009) defines coaching as “unlocking people’s potential to maximize their own performance”. Coaching has been shown to positively impact psychological factors such as reducing stress and improving wellbeing and resilience (Grover & Furnham, 2016). Common outcomes from coaching include increased self-efficacy, performance and satisfaction (Jarvis, 2008). Coaching is becoming more widely used across the Higher Education (HE) sector. This includes coaching support for senior management and increasing provision for researchers (Medd, 2012). However there is very little research into the efficacy of academic coaching for improving learning and teaching practice.

I propose that coaching may be a positive developmental intervention that can improve confidence and competence in teaching. During this webinar, we will:

investigate the benefits and challenges of adopting a coaching approach

try out a range of coaching tools and techniques that encourage academic development

debate the feasibility of adopting a coaching approach for improving learning and teaching practice

The next open Teaching and Learning Conversation webinar is delivered by Martin Hawksey, Chief Innovation, Community and Technology Officer at ALT.

There has been much research in the use of social media to support learning and teaching. In many instances it is argued that it enables a decentralization of learning moving towards a distributed model which has many benefits including supporting a stronger foundation for lifelong learning.

Twitter is one service that has been widely used within this context. The introduction of hashtags as a mechanism to allow communities to form and contribute to a topic is now a well established model within both formal and informal education as well as in society in general. The use of Twitter in this way removes boundaries extending the opportunities for co-learning, in particular, discussions can become less siloed, every contribution to a hashtag community is potentially another opportunity for someone else to join the conversation. The thinning of the walls in this way is not without it implications and the vulnerability of being a learner should never be underestimated. Another consideration is that Twitter has been adopted as a tool to support learning in this way rather than being designed for this purpose. As a result exploring and finding understanding within hashtag communities can be problematic and with many open learning contexts individuals can end up feeling lost.

This conversation will explore approaches to help learners and educators gain more insight and a feeling of place within hashtag communities. As part of this we will look at TAGS and TAGSExplorer tools (https://tags.hawksey.info) which have been developed with educators and learners in mind to help support the collection, analysis and exploration of Twitter hashtag communities. These free tools provide a means to collect data from Twitter searches and analysis the results either in Google Sheets, where the data is collected, or visualized in the companion TAGSExplorer web interface. As part of this conversation we will touch upon the limitation of data collection from Twitter and issues around data protection and privacy. We will also provide some examples of where TAGS/TAGSExplorer has been used within an educational context.

About Martin:

Martin is Chief Innovation, Community and Technology Officer for the Association for Learning Technology and developer of TAGS/TAGSExplorer. Martin has held advisory roles within the UK educational technology sector for a number of government-funded services. In these roles, he has supported staff in the exploration and adoption of innovative approaches to teaching and learning. He created TAGS and TAGSExplorer out of his own interest in hashtag communities and has used it as a vehicle to learn about social network analysis and data collection and visualization techniques.
