ALT seeks an Editor-in-Chief to lead the Research in Learning Technology Journal

 

Research in Learning Technology (RLT) is the peer reviewed, Open Access journal published by the Association for Learning Technology. Since 1993, the RLT journal has been raising the profile of research in learning technology, encouraging research that informs good practice and contributing to the development of policy. RLT publishes articles in the following broad areas: technology enhanced learning, online learning, distance learning, mobile learning, flexible learning, wearable technologies, simulation, learning environments, learning spaces, digital pedagogy, open educational practice, artificial intelligence and social media.

Our current Editor-in-Chief, Michael Flavin, will be stepping down after 7 years as an Editor then Editor-in-Chief of RLT. During his tenure, Michael successfully led the RLT Editorial team and supported ALT’s community to publish and access high-quality research in the field of learning technology. 

ALT is now seeking its next Editor-in-Chief and invites expressions of interest in the role.

 

What the role involves

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for guiding the strategic direction and maintaining the editorial quality of the Research in Learning Technology (RLT) journal. This role involves overseeing the peer-review process, managing editorial standards, and ensuring timely publication. The Editor-in-Chief collaborates closely with the Editorial team, Research and Publications Board and ALT (Association for Learning Technology) staff to uphold the journal’s mission and promote its visibility within relevant research communities. Additionally, the Editor-in-Chief plays a pivotal role in developing initiatives that enhance the journal’s impact and ensure it maintains its status as a quartile 1 publication.

The Editor-in-Chief is a volunteer and the role is not remunerated. 

Strategic Oversight of the Journal

  • Lead the development and execution of strategic goals for the journal in collaboration with the Research and Publications Board.
  • Ensure each article aligns with RLT’s mission, providing appropriate voice, context, balance, and clarity.

Editorial Process Management

  • Assign papers to qualified reviewers, monitor the quality of reviews, and ensure timely feedback.
  • Oversee a team of six editors, providing mentorship and guidance to support editorial excellence.
  • Serve as the final arbiter on manuscript acceptance, ensuring consistency with RLT’s editorial strategy.
  • Ensure articles meet RLT standards and are published in a timely manner.

Collaboration and Reporting

  • Collaborate with the Editorial Board to promote the journal and attract high-quality submissions via professional networks.
  • Liaise effectively with the Research and Publications Board Chair, ALT staff, and team of editors to ensure smooth editorial operations.
  • Attend regular board meetings and submit regular reports on editorial activities and journal progress.

Ethical Standards and Scholarly Integrity

  • Ensure adherence to ethical publishing practices and address any ethical issues raised by authors or reviewers.
  • Foster a respectful, fair, and transparent environment for all contributors.

Promotion and Community Engagement

  • Lead initiatives to increase the journal’s visibility, including speaking at conferences and engaging with research communities.
  • Identify indexing opportunities for the journal and communicate them to ALT.
  • Contribute to promotional activities that highlight RLT’s research focus and values.

Reporting and New Initiatives

  • Prepare an annual report for the Board of Trustees, detailing editorial activities, progress, and improvement opportunities.
  • Identify and lead new projects that support RLT’s growth and relevance in the field of learning technology.

 

Who we are looking for

We are looking for expressions of interest from individuals who have:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in research, editorials and/or publishing, evidenced by publications and/or successful support of others toward publication.
  • A strong understanding of research methods and best practices.
  • A strong understanding of the scholarship that underpins Learning Technology.
  • Proven experience in managing teams and maintaining high standards.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A current member of ALT in good-standing or willingness to become a member upon appointment.
  • A commitment to the role and responsibilities of an Editor-in-Chief.
  • A commitment to the role for a minimum of three years, with the maximum commitment being six years

 

The following are not essential, but would be an advantage:

  • Experience of coaching or supporting others to undertake research and/or publish.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the principles of open access publishing.
