Description:   This timely workshop addresses the current theory and practice surrounding the use of weblogs and RSS (Really Simple Syndication) within a variety of educational settings. Weblogs, which most popularly appear in the form of online journals, have heralded a new era in personal publishing but what do these new tools offer in terms of enhancing the learning and teaching process? What are the advantages to combining them with technologies such as RSS news feeds?

Beginning with a brief introduction to the history weblogging, this workshop will introduce participants to the terminology and functionality of weblogs and RSS, using a variety of examples from the educational sector and beyond. It will examine how individual, group and multi-user weblogging in combination with RSS news feeds can be used to support student-centred learning, collaborative practices, knowledge sharing and knowledge building.

The practical elements of the workshop will encourage participants to engage with a range of tools and resources that support weblogging by setting up their own weblogs, news feeds and test scenarios.

Topics to be covered
  • the history of weblogs and their technical architecture
  • weblog formats and functionalities
  • the pedagogical implications of using weblogs
  • weblogging and RSS (Really Simple Syndication) tools and practices
  • aggregating weblogs using RSS

    Expected outcomes

By the end of the session participants will:
  • be familiar with a broad range of weblog formats and weblogging tools from both a theoretical and practical perspective.
  • be aware of the potential benefits of using weblogs both as personal research tool and as a learning and teaching tool especially when combined with RSS (Really Simple Syndication).
  • be able to critically assess the pedagogical aspects of deploying weblogs and RSS in differing learning and teaching scenarios.

    Who should attend?
This introductory to intermediate level workshop will be of interest to anyone wishing to familiarise themselves with the use of weblogs and really simple syndication (RSS) within a range of learning and teaching situations. Particularly Educators in Higher and Further Education, Adult and Community Education.
