Update from the ALT Board of Trustees

Chairs

We are entering a new chapter in ALT’s governance, and this announcement marks an important milestone in shaping the organisation’s future leadership.

The next Chair of the ALT Board of Trustees has been appointed. At the Annual General Meeting later this year, Professor Keith Smyth will take on the role of Chair. Keith brings six years of experience to the Board, having served as Vice Chair since 2019 and Interim Chair since November 2024.

The Board of Trustees invited Keith to assume the role of Chair on a formal basis for one full term of three years, in the first instance. With recent changes in ALT’s senior leadership, and with a number of colleagues on the Board coming to the end of their terms this year and next, the Trustees believe that this appointment will provide ALT with continuity in governance.

Reflecting on the appointment, Dave White, President of ALT, shared:

"I'm delighted that Keith has taken up the role of Chair of ALT. In his time as a trustee Keith has been both a steady hand and a strategic thinker. He has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in Digital Education. These are the exact qualities and depth of expertise ALT needs as we navigate the future."

Keith has particular interests in co-creative pedagogies and curriculum models, open education and scholarship, and digital educational strategy and policy. Keith developed the openly licensed 3E Framework for technology-enhanced learning which has been used extensively across FE and HE, and has been actively involved as a trustee and volunteer for several third sector education organisations and initiatives.

Now that Keith's appointment as Chair has been confirmed, we will shortly be inviting Expressions of Interest for a new Vice-Chair. This role is by appointment, with the successful candidate taking up the position at the AGM.

We look forward to welcoming new leadership and continuing to strengthen ALT’s governance in the years ahead, as we prepare to launch our new organisational strategy.
