Programme

10:00 Welcome and Introductions - Lou Mycroft

10:10 TeacherMatic - Co-designing an AI platform with the FE sector
           Peter Kilkoyne, Managing Director, Teachermatic

Use of AI can have many positive impacts on teachers’ practice from streamlining administrative tasks to save precious time, to designing engaging learning activities to inspire creativity in learning spaces.

The TeacherMatic AI tool now has 99 generators which help teachers with administrative tasks, course materials and learning resource and activity design, and aid leaders with quality assurance and staff development tasks.

Peter Kilcoyne will explain how Teachermatic was co-designed with and by FE and Skills practitioners and why their input was so important in the final designs. He’ll also discuss how TeacherMatic is now being used across the sector.

10:35  AI and Social Purpose
           Dr Lou Mycroft

We almost certainly come into education because we want to ‘make a difference’. Yet it’s rare that we have an opportunity to really think through our ethics, particularly when systematic change is happening. In this session, Lou Mycroft explores a social purpose approach to using - and not being used by - AI.

11:00 Short break

11:10 About the Insights research and launch of new AI case studies
          Lynne Taylerson

11:20 Barrier Busting: enabling appropriate AI use in FE
          Pete Dunford, Lecturer, Bridgend College

Although many staff and students in FE embrace generative AI as a tool that can assist in their day-to-day activities, there are many more who are confused, anxious or undecided about what it is and how it can be used appropriately to aid learning. Recognising that these voices are important in the debate, Pete Dunford has created two open-access resources that are available to be used by anyone to start conversations, provide a framework for the appropriate use of AI in different contexts, and empower anyone to have a go if they wish. In this session, Pete will discuss the research journey behind these resources and how he is using them with his students and colleagues in Bridgend College.

11:50 The AI Translate initiative
          Deborah Millar, Hull College

AI Translate is a whole college initiative instigated by Deb at Hull College. All educators and College support staff were provided with training on a range of translation apps and encouraged to use them to assist learners for whom English is not a first language. AI Translate has been instrumental in making all learners feel welcome and able to fully participate not only in their College curriculum but more widely in working, social and community life. Deb will detail how she instigated and promoted this hugely successful, award-winning initiative and the considerable impacts that it has had.

12:20 Lunch break

12:50 Digital Champions working in Prison Education close the digital divide for those in prisons
Alison Brown, Novus Local Education Manager, HMP Preston

Alison discusses the digital journey in prisons and how Digital Champions are effecting change which positively impacts on the learners' experience and exposure to digital technologies, including the introduction to and use of AI for their personal projects despite facing challenges of restricted access.

13:20 AI in Action: The AI Working Group at Burton and South Derbyshire College
Zoe Tierney, Learning Technologist, Burton and South Derbyshire College

Join Zoe Tierney for an insightful 20-minute case study presentation on the AI Working Group at Burton and South Derbyshire College. This session will explore how the group was formed, its achievements in its first year, and its ongoing efforts to integrate AI into teaching, learning, and assessment. Learn how we have introduced AI to staff and learners, the successes and challenges we’ve encountered, and how we’re supporting staff to develop the digital skills necessary for AI adoption. The session will conclude with a Q&A, offering attendees the opportunity to explore the potential of AI in education, setting up working groups and how they can be harnessed effectively.
