Photographs and copyright infringement claims: a workshop for education

This webinar will be held on 21st July from 2-3:30 PM (BST) hosted by Chris Morrison and Jane Secker Co-chairs of the ALT CoOL SIG.

About this event

It is aimed at those working in education establishments who have received copyright infringement claims from picture agencies for their use of photographs, some of which are Creative Commons licensed. There are a number of individuals who appear to be deliberately uploading openly licensed photos to sites such as Flickr using older Creative Commons licences that specify images need to be attributed in a particular way. You can read more about this practice in a recent article in Computer Weekly:

We will be joined by Andre Maingot from the Open University who will discuss how his institution has handled these claims. We will also be joined by Sarah Pearson and Brigitte Vezina from Creative Commons who will discuss good practice when using Creative Commons licensed content. The event will include short presentations but also be a workshop to discuss a shared approach from the UK education community to handling these claims in a way that doesn't encourage the practice some are calling 'copyright trolling.'

The session will be structured as follows:

Intro to the issue of copyright image trolling and the problems it’s causing universities, schools and colleges including some background on Pixsy and other agencies who look for possible copyright infringement in relation to image use (Jane and Chris) – 10 mins

Short case study from Open University on their experience and response (Andre Maingot) – 10 mins

Response from Creative Commons (Sarah Pearson) – 15 mins

Group activity to share experiences - to find out frequency it’s happening / what people have done and could be done - break-out room discussions – 30 mins

Next steps / any possible solutions and wrap up – 15 mins

This is a closed session only for those working in the education sector. Please complete the registration form and you will be sent joining instructions.
