After a year of experimentation with remote instruction, institutions in the Asia-Pacific region and other regions are planning how remote learning can create versatile, sustainable and disruption-resilient learning opportunities in the future. However, teachers currently may not know how state-of-the-art learning technologies and educational development practices can support sustainable virtual instruction. Therefore, different organisations are organising various professional development initiatives on virtual instruction.

In the webinar, two professional development initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region will be explained in detail:

[Empowering Teachers for the Next-Stage Teaching with Emerging Learning Technologies]
In this initiative, we want to provide cross-region professional development webinars during Summer 2021 on educational technologies and educational development for virtual instruction. Some of the training topics include i) Artificial Intelligence for Teaching, Learning and Assessment, ii) Open Educational Resources (OER) and OER-enabled Learning, and iii) Engineering Education for the Next-Normal. This initiative is supported by IEEE Region 10 Educational Activities Committee.

[Empowering University Teaching Centres for the Next-Stage Virtual Teaching]
In this initiative, we aim to analyse the impact of COVID-19 e-teaching training programmes in universities as well as identify common training needs and recommended practices for virtual instruction in the next stage. Therefore, we are conducting studies to answer the following questions: How should we help teachers develop competencies for remote instruction through various types of training, training methods and training media? How should we facilitate change among stakeholders (students, teachers, supporting staff) for virtual instruction in the next stage? This initiative is supported by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong.
