Getting the Most from ALT-C

Presenters: Theresa Kinnison, Becta; George Roberts, Oxford Brookes University; John Phelps, Goldsmiths, University of London.

Theresa Kinnison advises on elearning (ICT) to support the 14-19 Agenda for the British Communications and Technology Agency, the Governments key partner in delivering ICT to the Schools and Learning and Skills sectors.

George Roberts is Development Director, Off-campus e-Learning at Oxford Brookes University. He also teaches new literacies with the Open University. Previously he was an instructional designer and adult education practitioner.

John Phelps is Head of the Centre for Excellence in Learning Technology at Goldsmiths, University of London. His experience ranges from managing change in institutions and developing strategies to support blended learning, to supporting the use of individual technologies to better enable learning for the student.

Workshop overview
This workshop provides an introductory session to ALT, its annual conference and the field of learning technology. The workshop will:

  • get you started with the technology and pedagogy looking at a jargon busting approach to the key ideas within learning technology,
  • provide you with an up to date idea of 'hot topics' (to help you decide which sessions to be early for!),
  • enable new delegates to better explore the ALT-Conference through identifying sessions and networking opportunities to maximise the ALT-C experience,
  • explain how ALT represents its members and informs policy development in education.

Topics to be covered:

  • Learning Technology - jargon busting the technology; a non-researcher's briefing.
  • Getting the most out of ALT-C 2005 - general tips; choosing the right sessions for you.
  • ALT: How ALT represents its members and helps develop policy.

Expected outcomes
At the end of the workshop participants will have:

  • explored the field of technology and pedagogy,
  • developed a strategy for getting the most out of ALT-C,
  • seen how ALT represents and provides benefits for its members.

 

Getting certified: the ins and outs of CMALT, ALT's certification scheme for learning technologists.

Presenters: Seb Schmoller, ALT.

Seb Schmoller combines half-time employment as Executive Secretary of ALT with freelance work on e-learning. He has managed the CMALT project since its inception.

Workshop overview
This workshop will enable participants to find out about CMALT, and to decide whether or not to apply for certified membership.

Topics to be covered and expected outcomes:

  • Background to CMALT.
  • Details of CMALT, including what you have to do to obtain certification.

 

LADIE: e-Learning Framework Reference Model for the Learning Activity Domain

Presenters: Prof Grainne Conole, University of Southampton; Prof Allison Littlejohn, University of Dundee; Dr Charles Duncan and Dr Peter Douglas, Intrallect Ltd.

Grainne Conole has published and presented over 200 conference proceedings, workshops and articles, and is Editor of the ALT's journal, ALT-J. Current projects include the HEFCE funded e-Learning Research Centre, the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods, the JISC/NSF DialogPlus project and evaluation of the HEFCE e-China project.

Allison Littlejohn, Editor of Reusing Online Resources, has served as consultant to a range of projects funded by JISC, SHEFC and the Scottish Executive. For several years she has been an associate of the Higher Education Academy and leads a range of initiatives through key elearning organisations in the UK, Australia, America and Europe.

Peter Douglas and Charles Duncan founded Intrallect in 2000 with Martin Morrey, and produce intraLibrary, a product chosen to the JORUM National Repository in the UK. Charles and Peter have been involved in e-learning for many years, and have expertise in learning technology standards, digital repositories and IMS learning design.

Workshop overview
The E-Learning Framework (ELF) aims to make explicit the network functions of e-learning to offer greater interoperability, and to create a common approach across the e-learning community. The LADIE ELF reference model project is mapping the Learning Activity Domain to the ELF, through the consideration of the design, construction and execution of learning activities The LADIE project combines practical teaching and learning experience, pedagogy/didactics through the DialogPlus project in addition to the needs of existing technologies.

Topics to be covered and expected outcomes:
This seminar will both the pedagogical and technical aspects of the project, the relationship to DialogPlus, and to give an overview of the Learning Activity Reference Model. This seminar aims to disseminate the work of LADIE reference model project, and to benefit from the viewpoints of the wider e-learning community.

 

SSeLF workshop: Planning for Blended Learning

Presenters: Prof Robin Mason, OU UK and Prof Tom Boyle, London Metropolitan University.

Robin Mason is a specialist in the research and practice of online teaching and learning. She was one of the early pioneers in developing the medium of computer conferencing for distance education, and completed her PhD - one of the very first on the subject - in 1989.

Tom Boyle is the Director of the LTRI at the LondonMetropolitan University. Tom holds degrees from three British universities, with higher degrees in Psychology and Computing, and he has written a book and over one hundred journal and conference papers on learning technology.

Workshop overview
This aim of this forum meeting is to discuss current thinking on managing blended learning.

Topics to be covered:
Robin Mason will outline ways in which the accessibility of information and the multi-way interactivity provided by the Internet affect how we plan teaching and learning in Higher Education. This is based on a new book by Frank Rennie and Robin Mason on 'The Connecticon: Learning for the Connected Generation'. Tom Boyle is leading the new £3 million HEFCE funded Centre for Excellence in teaching and Learning (CETL) I reusable Learning Objects. Tom will present ideas on designing Learning Objects for blended learning.

UML for Service Oriented Architectures

Presenters: Prof. Balbir S. Barn, Thames Valley University and Dr Hilary Dexter, e-Learning Research Centre, University of Manchester.

Balbir Barn is leading a JISC project applying SOA concepts to E-learning - COVARM. Before that, Balbir researched extensively on UML Component Based Development methods and design of component modeling toolsets at Texas Instruments Research.

Hilary Dexter is a Research Fellow in the eLearning Research Centre (Manchester) with extensive industry experience, in IT Architect role, of system modelling with UML for the implementation of model driven development and SOA.

Workshop overview
'Service Oriented Architecture' (SOA) is new approach to software development. It is also one that is being promoted by the JISC. SOA places a considerable challenge on designers and developers on how they might design and specify such services and finally how they might bring together a set of services to form an application. This workshop introduces the audience to how UML can be used to address these challenges and support the SOA development process using a model driven approach.

Topics to be covered:

  • Just enough UML - Process Modelling, Class Modelling, Use Case Modelling
  • Service Oriented Architecture Concepts
  • Method Overview using an example

Expected outcomes
At the end of the workshop, attendees will:

  • understand service oriented architecture concepts,
  • have awareness of a practical UML based method for SOA,
  • understand the SOA and its relationship to the JISC e-Learning strategy.

RAE 2008 Consultation on RAE Panel Draft Criteria and Working Methods

A response to the consultation, which takes account of the needs of the learning technology research discipline will be presented and discussed during this session. The response is being drawn up over the summer during two consultation workshops being run by the DfES with ALT, and chaired by Professor Diana Laurillard, Head of the DfES e-Learning Strategy Unit.
