Workshops details

Uses of Twitter in Higher Education and its potential in other sectors

Date:   2010-05-04
Time:   10:00
Venue:   Nottingham
Presenter(s):   Matt Lingard - London School of Economics
Tony McNeill - Kingston University
Alan Cann - University of Leicester

Tony McNeill
Tony is a Principal Lecturer in Educational Technology at Kingston University. He is currently involved in a small LearnHigher-funded project on the use of Twitter to support student engagement, the final evaluation of which is due in May 2010. He is particularly interested in the ways in which the technology-mediated literacy practices associated with social networking sites like Facebook (e.g. the creation of ‘microcontent’ in the form of status updates and wall posts) might transfer to formal educational contexts and help develop learning communities. Could Twitter be used to enable dialogue, collaborative note-taking, resource sharing, and the posting of questions, comments and reflections?

Matt Lingard
Matt Lingard is a Learning Technologist at the London School of Economics. He has over 15 years experience of teaching and training and has worked in the field of educational technology for the last 8 years. He regularly delivers internal and external workshops to practitioners across the education sector on a variety of e-learning topics. He is particularly interested in the use of social technologies in both teaching and research. Matt ‘tweets’ for ALT (@A_L_T) and is the one of the Web Participation Co-ordinators for ALT-C 2010.

Alan Cann
Dr Alan Cann is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Leicester, UK. He has over 15 years experience of developing and delivering online learning materials for science and mathematics. In recent years he has worked extensively developing new approaches to delivering learning materials via web 2.0 technologies. Alan is also one of the Web Participation Co-ordinators for ALT-C 2010.
