Dr Jen Harvey is the Head of Lifelong Learning at the Dublin Institute of Technology. Currently, she is the education officer of the Irish Learning Technology Association and is involved in the creation of the Irish National Digital Learning Repository project.
Dr Martin Oliver is a senior lecturer at the Institute of Education. He is an editor of ALT-J, and co-editor of “contemporary perspectives in e-learning research”.

Overview
With the ongoing drive towards cost-effective ‘best practice’ models of elearning delivery, are both the criteria whereby we judge elearning a success and the evaluation methods used to make such judgements about elearning practice also changing to help address the promise of new and emergent technologies?
Using a case study approach, this workshop will:
Use practical examples of different evaluative studies to explore whether such changes are explicit;
Address issues of concern to elearning practitioners involved in evaluating quality in the elearning experience.
Topics to be covered
Definitions of and possible approaches to evaluating elearning practice;
What can be considered to be ‘best practice’ in elearning and whether it is possible make evaluative judgements about the use of emergent elearning technologies across different contexts;
Approaches to planning evaluation work, including strategies to address the concerns of different stakeholder groups in order to maximise the use of key evaluation outcomes.
Expected outcomes:
Participants will have the opportunity to reflect upon the key issues relating to evaluating their own elearning practice and the development of an evaluation strategy to address specific stakeholder requirements.
Who should attend?
Practitioners involved in, staff supporting or managing others using elearning technologies. Participants are encouraged to bring and share an example of an evaluation plan that needs development.
